We are the world’s largest provider of satellite capacity for network services, according to Euroconsult, with a 33% global share. There is an increasing need for basic and high-speed connectivity for fixed and mobile applications in developed and emerging regions around the world. We provide an essential element of the infrastructure supporting the rapid expansion of wireless services in many emerging regions.
Network services is our largest customer set and at $1.2 billion accounted for 46% of our revenue for the year ended December 31, 2013, a 1% growth as compared to 2012. Network Services contracted backlog totaled $3.2 billion at December 31, 2013, as compared to $3.6 billion at year-end 2012.
Our business generated from the network services sector is generally characterized by non-cancellable, two to five year contracts with many of the world’s leading communications providers. These providers include fixed and wireless telecommunications companies, such as global carriers and regional and national providers in emerging regions, corporate network service providers, such as VSAT services providers to vertical markets including banks, value-added services providers, such as those serving the oil and gas, consumer aeronautical broadband and maritime sectors, and multinational corporations and entities.
Customers use Intelsat’s services because of our reliability and resilience, with multiple satellites serving each region, and because of our global coverage, allowing our commercial customers to scale their businesses quickly and efficiently.
In 2013, we advanced our strategy to provide broadband infrastructure for telecommunications and enterprise requirements. In addition, we continued to advance our share of the growing mobility sector, supporting applications such as in-flight passenger broadband services and broadband for maritime applications such as shipping vessels.
In 2014, our Network Services business is focused on productizing our next generation Intelsat EpicNG satellite infrastructure. This includes working with existing customers to transition large and complex fixed, wireless and mobile networks onto the more efficient, high throughput platform. In addition, we continue to focus on managing our portfolio of services provided to customers doing business on the African continent, where price competition has resulted in reduced revenue opportunity in the short term. The next significant growth catalyst for our Network Services business is the launch of the first EpicNG satellite, Intelsat 29e, in the latter half of 2015.
