2000 Annual Report

LEVERAGING THE INTERNET ACROSS
ALL LINES OF BUSINESS

Over the next two years, AmSouth plans to triple the number of customers using Internet Banking. But Rod Woodford’s focus is not on technology; it’s on how technology can help attract new customers, deepen our relationships with current customers and provide better service.

Woodford, director of e-Commerce, is responsible for executing AmSouth’s comprehensive approach to Internet Banking, but his background is in traditional, customer-focused banking.

Internet Banking isn’t a novelty at AmSouth. It’s another way to provide convenient service to our customers, around the clock and around the globe, every day of the year. We received an e-mail from a customer on a business trip. He wrote: “I’m sitting here in Paris doing my banking with AmSouth, and my wife’s in Denver paying her bills. Internet Banking is great. We’re naming our first child ‘AmSouth.’”

Customers who use AmSouth Internet Banking are extremely attractive compared with the typical retail customer. Internet Banking customers on average:

Using his experience and knowledge of how customers want to bank, he links consumer, small business and commercial banking to create a cohesive effort. It’s an initiative deeply rooted in our continuous efforts to improve service. After all, we pioneered Telephone Banking and Bill Payment in our markets two decades ago.

In 2000, we redesigned our Web site to make it easier to use. But because part of being convenient is being fast, we’ve also boosted our capacity to serve large – and growing – numbers of customers. In fact, the number of customers who conducted transactions on the AmSouth site doubled in 2000.

  • Use twice as many of the bank’s products.
  • Are nearly three times as likely to have an equity line of credit.
  • Have a deposit balance 50 percent larger.

A national rating company has ranked AmSouth’s Internet Banking site in its top tier of providers nationwide, saying our customer service and the reliability of our site were especially noteworthy.

AmSouth’s Internet Banking will help attract new customers, deepen relationships with existing customers and provide better service overall. The key is its convenience.
