have increased at an annual rate of 27% 
since 1997. Our total membership of 1.84 
million grew 7.5% over 2000. Cash and 
investments of $952 million grew 27% 
over 2000 and total assets of $1.45 billion 
were 17% higher than in 2000.  

Achieving success in business is almost 
always the result of doing something right. 
In the case of Coventry, what we have done 
right is to focus all our energies on one 
thing: managing local health plans. It is the 
only thing we do and, as the results indi-
cate, I think it’s fair to say we do it well.  

Strictly speaking, Coventry is neither a 
national nor a regional company. Instead, 
we are a company that operates a portfolio 
of health plans focusing on local employers. 
Our local sales, patient management, and 
provider contracting efforts are supported by 
centralized service and technology centers.
