Duke Energy's presence in some regions is anchored by its subsidiaries that provide engineering, construction and related services. Duke Engineering & Services (DE&S), through its offices in South Africa, announced two major projects in 1998:

• A major engineering contract for a rural electrification project serving 300,000 people in South Africa; and
• In Mauritius, construction began on DE&S' largest renewable energy project to date - a 70 MW cogeneration plant to generate steam and power from sugar cane byproducts.
