At KeySpan, we recognize that the success of our business is intertwined with the well being of our communities. Our employees, our shareholders, our customers are all part of the communities we serve. We have learned from our long tradition of community commitment that it is a win-win situation. It makes good business sense – and it feels great.
In 1999, KeySpan had a new avenue for supporting our customers and communities – The KeySpan Foundation. The Foundation was created in December 1998, with an initial endowment from KeySpan of $20 million. Last year, in its first full year of operation, the Foundation pledged $1.7 million to 139 not-for-profit groups spanning KeySpan’s service territory.
The Foundation awarded its very first grants on January 29, 1999, providing $100,000 to the Long Island Works Coalition and Junior Achievement of New York. The Long Island Works Coalition was formed to ensure that the region has a sufficiently large, skilled workforce to meet the challenges of growth in a high-tech, global market. Junior Achievement of New York teaches young people to understand business and economics and the value of an education for succeeding in life. Grants like these not only enhance the lives of the people involved in the programs, but also support the economic growth and quality of life in our region.
