LEONARD
H. ROBERTS
Chairman and Chief Executive
Officer
RadioShack Corporation
Leonard
H. Roberts, Chairman and Chief
Executive Officer of RadioShack
Corporation, had one goal in
mind when he joined the company's
RadioShack operating unit as
President in 1993. He was determined
to transform this sleeping retail
giant into a service provider
whose mission is to demystify
technology in every neighborhood
in America. He is the catalyst
behind a successful re-imaging
campaign for RadioShack. That
initiative was followed by the
formation of strategic alliances
that, for the first time, put
name-brand store-within-a-store
concepts into RadioShack stores.
This campaign also took the
parts and accessories business
to a new level. Today, he is
at the helm of a company with
more than 7,200 retail stores
with revenues of $4.8 billion.
Since Roberts
took the helm at RadioShack, the company has experienced unprecedented
sales growth and profits. One of the most ingenious strategies Roberts
developed is the recurring profits model strategy, which has significantly
increased profits while enhancing the efficient use of the company's
capital resources. This recurring profit model, which includes residual
income from services sold, has transformed RadioShack into a retail
service concept.
Roberts also
recognized that RadioShack's unequaled distribution network, combined
with its merchandising and marketing strengths, offers potential
partners unprecedented reach into the electronics marketplace. With
his guidance, RadioShack has become the leading seller of cellular
and PCS digital phones, the largest retail channel for Compaq home
computers and the biggest retailer of satellite TV systems. He has
positioned RadioShack as a major player in the emerging home connectivity
revolution.
When he became
Chairman, President and CEO in 1999, Roberts established a vision
for RadioShack to become the most powerful one-stop shop to connect
people (through products and services) to the wonders of modern
technology. This encompasses four objectives. They are: (1) For
Our Customers Be the top specialty retail brand in America;
(2) For Our Shareholders Lead the specialty retail category
in shareholder return; (3) For Our Community Be recognized
nationally as an outstanding corporate citizen; and (4) For Our
Employees Be the best company for high-performing people
who demonstrate our corporate values.
Roberts' vision
and leadership have resulted in major business news coverage in
USA Today, Forbes and Business Week, and has brought industry accolades
such as a top 10 ranking in Entrepreneur Magazine's Best Franchises
list, and Top Ten Information Technology and Business Leaders in
Information Week. Prior to joining RadioShack, Roberts served as
Chairman and CEO of Shoney's Inc. and as President and CEO of Arby's
Inc. He is credited with engineering what has been widely acclaimed
as a remarkable turnaround at Arby's. He also served in key management
and marketing positions for Ralston Purina Company and managed major
new product development programs for Armour and Company and the
Central Soya Company.
Roberts is
a graduate of the University of Illinois where he earned degrees
in marketing and chemistry. He also earned a law degree from De
Paul University Law School in Chicago and was admitted to the Illinois
Bar in 1974.
Roberts serves
as Chair of the Board of Governors of the United Way of America.
He is a member of the Executive Board of the National Retail Federation
(NRF) and Students in Free Enterprise, Inc. (SIFE). He is a board
member of the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, Junior Achievement,
National Crime Prevention Council, National Conference for Community
and Justice, and the Exchange Club of Fort Worth. He is a founding
board member of the Hank Aaron Chasing the Dream Foundation. Roberts
also serves on the Board of Trustees of Texas Christian University
and Texas Health Resources. He was elected to the Board of Directors
of J.C. Penney Company Inc. in February 2002.
In 1987, President
Ronald Reagan presented Roberts with the Presidential Private Sector
Initiative Award. In 1991, Roberts was honored with the annual Business
Leadership Award presented by Restaurant Business Magazine. He also
received the B'nai B'rith International Distinguished Achievement
Award and the 1991 Multi-Unit Foodservice Chain Operator's Award.
In 1992, Roberts received the Wall Street Bronze Critics Award.
Roberts was named Brandweek's Retailing Marketer of the Year in
1996. In February 1997, Roberts was named Sales & Marketing Executive
of the Year by the Sales & Marketing Executives of Fort Worth, Texas.
In May 1999, Roberts was honored as Father of the Year by the Dallas/Fort
Worth Father of the Year Committee. He was recognized by Texas Business
Magazine as one of the top 25 most influential Texans in Technology
in March 2000.
