Power Sector Gas Gains
Failure to keep up with demand growth has eliminated the massive spare capacity created during 1970’s.
26 GW added in 2000 was highest in 20 years
- Led to growth of 10% in power sector demand for gas
- Gas capacity grew only 50 GW from 89-99
2001 has potentially more gains in gas-fired capacity, but impact on gas consumption constrained by:
- Project delays or outright cancellations
- Effect of slowing economy on peaking plant utilization
- Degree to which new plants replace older gas plants
Wide range of estimated 2001 increase (0.5-3 bcf/d)
When will it materialize?
