Cellkem of Finland provides Scandinavia's pulp and paper industry with the chemicals necessary for production of billions of dollars worth of paper products. Converting brown wood pulp to white paper is a process that can be stymied by the generation of excessive amounts of foam. The traditional foam control agents that were used to reduce operating problems were based on blends of mineral oil and organic hydrophobic waxes that slowed production and decreased the quality of white paper. But traditional foam control agents may have contributed to an even bigger problem in environmentally-conscious Scandinavia by producing dioxins that might find their way into waterways and aquifers.
A new silicone-based antifoam developed by Cellkem and Crompton breaks new ground by providing the same level of performance with one-twentieth the concentration of mineral oil. Today, Cellkem customers operate with reduced chemical consumption, increased yield and better product quality. And there is no significant negative environmental impact.
