1998 Annual Report
Habitat for Humanity
It takes more than enthusiasm and energy to fuel an army of workers in Houston's June heat. In fact, it took 14,000 cases of food, drinks, plates and utensils provided by SYSCO Corporation, its Houston subsidiary and SYSCO suppliers to feed the 7,500 volunteers who built 100 homes this past summer as part of the Houston Habitat for Humanity Jimmy Carter Work Project. Each day of the week, three 32-foot SYSCO trucks delivered snacks and drinks to the work sites and meal ingredients to six school dining facilities designated to feed the workers. SYSCO also awarded each of the 100 families a gift certificate redeemable for food products.
Building Choices In The Community
Each of SYSCO Corporation's various distribution companies operates autonomously and serves its local community independently by selecting charitable and volunteer activities that create better choices for the citizens in their individual markets. Much of SYSCO's contribution is in donating food products to local food banks. Whether it is supplying food for a homeless shelter or meals to volunteers, SYSCO is often associated with projects that make a contribution to improving the lives of those in need. In addition, SYSCO has a long-standing commitment to higher education as one of the core strengths of our nation's past and future success.
An estimated 13 million children in America are confronted with hunger every day.
In 1988, SYSCO joined forces with Second Harvest, the largest charitable hunger-relief organization in the United States, and its Kids Café program to provide meals for hungry children across the nation. For each case of Serene™ disposable products sold to foodservice operations from April 1 through June 30, 1998, SYSCO Corporation donated $0.10 to Second Harvest.
