NOTE 3.
DISCONTINUED OPERATIONS
In 1998, we declared Hospital Group of America (“HGA”),
our psychiatric services business, a discontinued operation and
recorded a charge of $22.3 million reflecting our initial estimate
of the ultimate loss on disposition.
In January 1999, we completed the sale of a portion of
HGA for $5 million in cash and trade receivables. On April
15, 1999, we sold the remainder of HGA to Universal Health
Services, Inc. for $27 million and recorded gains on disposal
of $1.3 million in the first quarter and $1.7 million in the
second quarter, reflecting adjustments to the loss estimated in
1998.
HGA’s patient revenues were $20.8 million and $55.5
million for fiscal years ended October 31, 1999 and 1998,
respectively.
