The Mill Group is comprised of 15 paperboard mills and five converting facilities that produce 100% recycled coated and uncoated paperboard for all four of the industry's principal markets: folding cartons; tubes, cores and composite containers; gypsum wallboard facing paper and "other specialty" paperboard products. In 2001, the Mill Group shipped 892,000 tons of recycled paperboard. Folding carton grades represented 36 percent of shipments, tube, core and composite containers were 24 percent, other specialty grades were 23 percent and gypsum facing paper shipments were 17 percent of total shipments.

The Mill Group produces both coated and uncoated recycled paperboard for a wide variety of end uses. Clay coated recycled grades of paperboard are used for a broad range of folding carton applications including packaging for pasta, candy, crackers and pet food products. The coated mills also supply light-weight clay coated grades for use as the top-ply sheet in the manufacture of micro-flute containers. Uncoated paperboard is used in the manufacture of tubes, cores and composite containers for industrial and consumer products. Specialty paperboard mills and converted products plants manufacture laminated paperboard for niche end uses such as puzzles, game boards, picture frame backs and easels, coin folders, mat boards, furniture components, automotive panels and book cover boards. The Mill Group is also the largest independent producer of gypsum facing paper for the wallboard manufacturing industry.

The Recovered Fiber Group operates seven recovered fiber recycling centers that receive loose recovered paper, then sort, bale and ship fiber to domestic and export customers. The RFG also brokers recovered fiber to domestic and foreign customers through its Caraustar Paper Sales locations in Marietta, Georgia and Rittman, Ohio. Of the Recovered Fiber Group’s seven plants, five are post-consumer (handle grades like office fiber and cardboard) and two are post-industrial (handle fiber directly from paper mills and other industrial applications). This fiber is graded and shipped in bales or rolls to paper mills worldwide. The RFG provides small baler services for small to moderate generators of recovered fiber and acts as a primary broker-dealer for large generators of recovered fiber. The RFG also provides consulting services to Caraustar customers that are seeking unique low-cost solutions for their recycling activities.
