2004 was a great year for the Catawba Operation, establishing new production and safety records and receiving the South Carolina Chamber’s manufacturing award for large facilities. Two significant one-year anniversaries were realized the completion of a new fiber line and the conversion of the No. 3 Paper Machine from newsprint to coated paper.
Many of the new production records were made possible by the construction of the fiber line and the No. 3 Paper Machine conversion. The fiber line produces environmentally friendly, quality kraft pulp for use on our machines. The new and improved pulp allows the machines to have less downtime and run at increased speeds. 2004 was a record pulp and paper production year for the entire Catawba site. More specifically, the previous total annual paper production record at Catawba was 565,500 metric tons. That mark was passed on Nov. 28, 2004 with 33 days left in the year. The new annual paper production record is 624,000 metric tons, an increase of over 10%.
The No. 3 Paper Machine production increased as well. Before its rebuild, the total annual No. 3 Paper Machine production record was 236,200 metric tons. The record was broken with 69 days still left in the year. The new annual record on No. 3 Paper Machine is 292,000 metric tons, which represents an increase of 24%.
