Bowater Incorporated 2004 Annual Report

Catawba Conversion, continued

Safety improvements by the mill employees marked another significant achievement, reaching 4.5 million work hours without a lost-time accident. This was a record for the Catawba site.

Employees at the facility are proud of these gains throughout 2004. In September, the mill earned the 2004 South Carolina Large Manufacturer of the Year award - which was presented by the state Chamber of Commerce and the National Association of Manufacturers. The award recognizes exemplary companies reflecting world-class standards in manufacturing quality products. The award was also based on the mill's goodwill to employees and to the surrounding communities. Judges evaluated how the Catawba Operation addresses environmental stewardship, quality of life and community and professional involvement issues for employees and its nearby communities.

In its 45th year of operation, the Catawba Mill employees have made the operation one of the lowest-cost and best operations of its kind in the world.
