Web-scale Demand
Web-scale as a distinct customer vertical refers to a community of internet content providers and carrier neutral providers of co-location and interconnect functionality for data centers. We count as Web-scale customers leading providers of search, social networking and web services, as well as other emerging network operators including data center and Ethernet exchange operators. Importantly, Web-scale is not just a customer segment, it is also a demand driver for our business. In addition to building their own networks, these companies purchase large amounts of network capacity from our traditional service provider and submarine customers around the world as well, making our total Web-scale position truly market leading.

8700 Packetwave
Ciena’s 8700 Packetwave Platform combines the best technologies from both data center networks and metro networks. The 8700 represents the first in what we believe is a new class of networking products to help network operators rapidly deliver high-capacity services, efficiently aggregate users and provide express connections to data centers. Coupling high-capacity Ethernet switching with intelligent coherent optics and an open software paradigm, this new platform enables network operators to scale their networks in support of ‘on-demand’ applications such as cloud services, streaming video and content distribution which continue to drive demand for 10GbE/100GbE services.

With a new division, Ciena Agility, we will provide turnkey solutions that enable service providers to offer virtualized network functions as on-demand, consumption-based business services. Our Agility software portfolio is designed to address network operators’ growing need to bring the programmability and on-demand nature of the cloud to the wide-area network (WAN). Including a multilayer SDN controller and set of software applications, Agility enables the delivery of virtualized, on-demand network services and functions. In addition, our virtual services software platform, Agility Matrix, modernizes the acquisition, distribution, consumption and payment of virtualized network functions (VNF) and allows enterprises to drastically improve performance of all enterprise and cloud-based applications and better manage distributed networks.
