How TriZetto Defines Application Services Provider (ASP)
The term "ASP" has become a buzzword describing a confusing array of business models, but TriZetto is literally defining the term for the healthcare industry. Unlike other single-product ASPs, we integrate, host, monitor and manage the best healthcare applications from multiple vendors in our own data centers. We deliver those applications to our customers-payers, providers or benefits administrators-freeing them from the capital investment, the operating costs associated with owning software and hardware, and the cost of managing the information infrastructure. Using TriZetto's ASP, we estimate that a customer can save 30-40% over five years, compared with industry average costs of ownership and maintenance.

As the graphic on this page shows, TriZetto offers a broad range of services:

Connectivity - the hardware, software and services needed to establish the communications "backbone" of the enterprise; the foundation for all other TriZetto services.

Hosting - implementation and ongoing support of the computing architecture that "rides" on the connectivity "backbone."

Applications - implementation and ongoing support of software "engines" essential to running the business, and "satellite" applications that add value to the engines. Applications are sold in convenient, pre-integrated product bundles, or unbundled, according to customer need.

Transactions - using ASP applications, processing transactions like billing, collections, claims and enrollment.

Information Access and Reporting - transforming raw data into information that can be used for business and clinical decisions.

Business Process Outsourcing - on-going support and staffing of essential business functions.

Educating the Market
First Consulting Group (FCG) recently published a telling statistic about ASPs. Over 93% of healthcare executives surveyed had heard of ASPs; only 10% said they fully understood what the concept meant. Therein lies one of TriZetto's major challenges-and opportunities-to educate potential customers about the benefits and cost effectiveness of using an ASP compared with more traditional methods.

According to FCG, the most important concerns that health plans have about using an ASP include data security and integrity, performance and reliability, customer service and the financial viability of the ASP itself. These concerns are not surprising, given the single-product focus of the typical ASP and the financial failure of many of these companies of late.

Since our founding four years ago, we have invested in the people, hardware and software to provide the kind of service, reliability and security that customers demand. We run our ASP data centers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. We maintain a 24-hour customer service call center and continuously monitor our customers' applications and supporting infrastructure. We have account management teams that help customers develop and upgrade their information technology strategies. And probably most impressive, our employee turnover rate is under 15%, and that translates into better, more dependable customer service.

Data security is fairly low in most healthcare organizations because records are mainly paper-based files. TriZetto employs the best-known technologies for security purposes to comply with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). HIPAA is a federal Act that requires secure storage, transmission and standardization of healthcare transactions. We have crafted TriZetto's technology strategy to help our customers to comply with the law.

Given the intense cost pressures in healthcare, we believe the industry will increasingly turn to TriZetto's ASP model as a single source for information technology and business services. TriZetto has and will continue to provide ASP products and services that win the confidence of customers. As that confidence grows, so will our market share and leadership position in the industry.
