Dependable
delivery is of prime importance to foodservice operators. SYSCO's computer
routing systems map the most direct delivery routes and create a daily
schedule that conforms to each customer's preferred delivery window. Combined
with information gathered from the truck's on-board computer systems, which
monitor speed, shifting and stops throughout the day, the routing system
allows SYSCO's route planners to improve service reliability.
Each
SYSCO operation inventories an average of 10,000 to 16,000 products. This
is up from about 3,000 in the early 1970s when warehouses lacked a range
of refrigeration capabilities. Modern facilities employ zoned refrigeration
from 0° up, including a 28° cooler for fresh meat and produce.
