Sapphire wafers of six-inch and larger diameter accounted for just 5% of all sapphire used by LED manufacturers in 2011. However, as LED manufacturers continue transitioning to larger-diameter substrates in order to gain cost and operational efficiencies, this figure is expected to grow exponentially—with six- and eight-inch sapphire expected to account for the overwhelming majority of sapphire shipped in 2020.

Given the growth projections for all LED applications, this movement toward larger substrates will require reliable production and delivery of considerable volumes.
