The Caraustar Recovered Fiber Group (RFG), operates eight recycled fiber recovery facilities and four brokerage operations in the U.S. With sales territories including the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and South America, the brokerage operations are responsible for purchasing reject paper and paperboard from paper mills and converting plants and recovered paper fiber from other sources. The materials are either brokered directly to the end user or shipped to one of our eight recovered fiber processing plants. In 2000 RFG brokered and processed 1.4 million tons of fiber, a 6.8 percent increase from 1.3 million tons in 1999.Each Caraustar mill has a fiber buyer and the RFG assists these buyers in sourcing the required raw material grades. These grades can change depending on the products that the mills make. The largest volume of recovered fiber sold by RFG is old corrugated containers (OCC). This material is generated by landfill operations, department stores, grocery stores and manufacturing plants. The next largest volume is double lined kraft (DLK). This material consists of trimmings generated at corrugated container plants. The newspaper grades sold include old newspapers (ONP) and overissue news. Mixed paper can include any combination of repulpable/recyclable papers and with OCC are the primary raw materials sold to the Caraustar mills, which make 100 percent recycled paperboard using no virgin pulp.
