    A passion for academic quality
    and affordable access

Many of our students are working adults, pursuing their studies and careers simultaneously, often while raising a family. APEI creates opportunities for these adult learners by providing access to a quality, affordable higher education. Through longstanding relationships with corporate partners, non-profits, and the military and public service communities, we attract a diverse body of college-ready students and take steps to help them succeed.

Since our founding, we have kept tuition affordable through innovative initiatives that improve cost-efficiencies and customer service. Examples include our ePress initiative to combat inflation in the cost of textbooks; our automated transfer credit system, which streamlines the transfer process; Faculty Connect, a proprietary collaboration tool that enhances teaching excellence; and our industry-leading Partnership at a Distance (PAD) information technology system that keeps administrative costs down. The result: Our combined tuition, fees and books at AMU and APU are roughly 20% less for undergraduate and 40% less for graduate students than the average in-state cost at a public university.5 We’re opening doors by providing access to quality degree programs and helping our students move forward.

Brandon Wilson completed his master’s in business administration at AMU—with a concentration in homeland security and emergency and disaster management—while working full time, fulfilling his military obligations as a U.S. Army reservist and helping out at his parents’ dairy farm. Now enrolled in the Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) program with the federal government, Brandon is a fellow at the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) fulfilling his dream to work in emergency and disaster management. While at FEMA he will complete rotations throughout the agency and convert to a permanent full-time position after two years.

    Growing recognition for best
    practices and teaching excellence

Winner of the Sloan Consortium’s Ralph E. Gomory Award for Quality Online Education and three-time recipient of Sloan’s Effective Practice Award, APUS is widely recognized for the best practices in online learning. Our success rests on a commitment to academic excellence and a high level of student and faculty engagement. We believe the quality of our academic programs is inextricably linked to a strong and engaged faculty, made up of researchers, scholars and experts in their respective fields. In 2013, APUS faculty published more than 400 books and papers, and earned nearly 400 awards for their professional practice, research and community service. Faculty at AMU and APU presented at more than 1,700 conferences, workshops and panels throughout the year.

Our curriculum is wide-ranging and continues to expand. Today, through our subsidiaries, we offer more than 95 degree programs, including those highly specialized fields such as Homeland Security, Cybersecurity, Intelligence, Fire Science, Space Studies, Emergency and Disaster Management and Logistics Management. Our faculty, many of whom are working professionals, bring real-life experiences to the classroom that enrich the learning experience. They share a commitment to supporting student success. Small class sizes—on average, 16 students—encourage faculty-student interaction and help make APUS a vibrant, collaborative academic community.

An award-winning detective with the San Diego Police Department, David Iorillo wants to take his career to the next level. He hopes to become a sergeant in the coming years and to someday transition to the private sector in the field of fraud and loss prevention investigations. “I chose to pursue my master’s at APU because it was a very challenging program,” he says. “It has broadened my perspective and helped me develop critical thinking skills—and I absolutely feel it will help me to achieve all of my goals.”

    Enhancing learning outcomes
    and the student experience

A pioneer in measuring student learning, we have a long history of measuring student performance and using those findings to improve student outcomes. Today, we collaborate with other institutions and non-profits to find ways to improve retention, persistence and performance. APUS participates in the National Survey of Student Engagement, a nationally normed assessment tool, and was recently selected as one of 12 Founding Institutions for the pilot of the John N. Gardner Institute for Excellence in Undergraduate Education’s Gateways to Completion™ (G2C™) process. APUS was the first fully-online university to participate in the institute’s Foundations of Excellence Program, and was recently chosen to participate in the inaugural offering of the Higher Learning Commission’s (HLC) Academy for Student Persistence and Completion.

We are exploring new learning technologies such as adaptive and competency-based learning, mobile technology, social media, and simulation and gaming technologies—technologies that improve student access, outcomes and engagement. As examples, students in our Criminal Justice program explore digital crime scenes and work in simulated laboratory settings; liberal arts students learn through interactive museums where a click takes them deeper to rich, educational content. We’re always innovating—finding new ways to enhance the learning experience, keep higher education affordable and help our students succeed.

Catrina Padgett was a single mother battling cancer when she left a job as a financial analyst to pursue a career in nursing. “At Hondros [College of Nursing],” she says, “I not only got the education that I needed to fulfill my dream of becoming an R.N., but also gained a family that will last a lifetime.” Today, she’s on the staff at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, OH—and moving forward through the online Registered Nurse to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (RN to BSN) completion program at Hondros College of Nursing.
