Slide 15 of 24
Notes:
- First, a large number of producers and labels have recently entered the picture – in the U.S. alone, the number of wineries grew from 600 in 1975 to 2,200 at the end of 1999
- At the same time, there has been a steady contraction in the number of wholesalers available to the growing number of producers:
- In 1975, there were 450 wholesalers in the USA, today there are only 170
- That means we have seen the ratio of wholesalers change from 1 for every 1.3 domestic producers to 1 for every 13 domestic producers
- This also means that it is increasingly difficult to get the wholesalers’ attention and focus, especially in this oversupply environment.
