Employees Participate in Marathon to Benefit Michael Dunn Center

Duratek employees in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, worked together to raise funds for the Michael Dunn Center, a private services center for people with developmental disabilities. Services to adults include supported employment, vocational training, community participation, residential transportation, and a variety of support services. Children’s services include child care, school-age programs, and a variety of therapeutic interventions.
The “Run for Dunn” campaign was held in conjunction with the inaugural Knoxville Marathon on March 20, 2005. Funds raised at two chili cook-offs and a pancake breakfast plus vendor/company donations were combined with pledges obtained by the runners.
Not only did Duratek have individual runners in the race, we also had a relay team and an extremely cheerful team of volunteers who provided moral support and water to all runners at Water Station #6—the 9.1-mile mark of the race. The Marathon’s water table coordinator stated: “I can’t begin to tell you all how much I appreciate your efforts on Sunday. I have gotten tons of compliments on how well you all did. I still think the water stations are the most important part of the marathon. If you don’t do your job right the runners will let us know. It also leaves a lasting impression of their experience. Now that you have gotten some experience you can help at future races!”
“We are delighted that our employees could be involved in Knoxville’s first city-wide marathon for such a great cause,” said Mike Johnson, Duratek Senior Vice President. “Duratek’s people are devoted to their community and are very enthusiastic about a corporate-sponsored fund-raising effort for this terrific Center. With teamwork, we raised not only funds, but also presented the Center with tangible gifts that we know will be used well,” he added, noting that Duratek employees donated three computers, helped facilitate the donation of a used bus, and contributed $12,000 toward the purchase of a new bus. Employees also donated flooring, and assembled a team of people to replace flooring at some of the Center’s facilities.
