BREEDING STEVIA PLANTS FOR HIGHER-YIELD

At Ingredion, the science of innovation is driven by expertise in plant science and recipe formulation. We are one of the few ingredient manufacturers with a dedicated team of plant scientists who employ advanced breeding and genomics to create new, proprietary hybrids that enhance resilience, increase yields and deliver superior functional benefits.

PureCircle™ by Ingredion, our stevia subsidiary, was first to map the stevia plant genome, enabling our scientists to trace and identify varietals by their unique genomic fingerprints.

The insights gained from studying the stevia genome have led to breakthroughs in developing better-tasting stevia solutions for food and beverage manufacturers. Equally important, they have enabled us to breed plants with a higher concentration of Reb M, a naturally occurring, zero-calorie sweetener valued for its clean, sugar-like taste, which is more than 200 times sweeter than sugar. Ingredion's bioconversion method for stevia leaf extract allows for enhanced production of Reb M. By mimicking the plant's natural production process, we convert the Reb A into higher-value Reb M.
