Spartan FPGAS Just as Virtex has revolutionized the value proposition to our high-end customers, the Spartan family is introducing new solutions to the low-density gate array market of under 50K system gates. Revenues from the Spartan family of FPGAs increased over eight-fold for the year, and at year-end, represented approximately 5% of total Xilinx revenues. During the year, Xilinx began shipping the SpartanXL family, a 3.3-volt version of Spartan with a significantly smaller die size. These smaller parts allow Xilinx to offer prices as low as $2.50 per device, targeting high-volume opportunities like consumer electronics. Spartan devices are benefiting not only from the growing scale of production volumes but from the shrinking product life cycles in high-volume markets. While customers in the high-end market segment order chips by the thousands, Spartan customers order devices in the hundreds of thousands. Products manufactured in high-volume markets have shorter life cycles than ever before due to fierce competition and consumers' insatiable demand for the latest features and technologies. Consequently, these products are being developed at a faster pace and time to market is becoming more critical. From digital modems and cellular handsets to automotive navigation systems, our entry into these high-volume applications is dramatically changing the scope of our business.
