Caring

Corporations should be about more than just profits and shareholders; they also should be a force for good in society. We have a long history of caring for our local communities through programs that directly address issues, such as domestic violence, youth empowerment and making our roads safer. This past year marked the 40th anniversary of the Allstate Helping Hands volunteer program, which provides Allstate agency owners and employees with volunteering opportunities that help make our communities better, stronger and safer. In 2016 alone, The Allstate Foundation, Allstate, its employees and agency owners gave $42 million – and Allstaters volunteered 230,000 hours of service – to support local communities.

Corporations Should Be a Force for Good

In a recent op-ed in WashingtonPost.com, Allstate CEO Tom Wilson made it clear that while shareholders “must get a good return…at the same time corporations must work to be a force for good in society.” He added that corporations “should be encouraged and rewarded for stepping up to solve society’s problems....We must broaden our evaluation of corporations beyond share prices to provide space, light and water for their role to grow.” Allstate is putting that ethos into action in a number of ways. Perhaps that’s why last March, the Ethisphere Institute, a global leader in defining and advancing the standards of ethical business practices, recognized Allstate as a 2016 World’s Most Ethical Company®.

Allstate Empowered 1.7 Million Youth to Make Communities Better

Allstate invests in youth by giving them the tools and resources to realize their full potential. Through the Good Starts Young initiative, youth are empowered to “rise up” to the challenges facing their communities and harness the energy that comes from self-confidence and the belief that one person has the power to make a difference. In 2016, Allstate empowered 1.7 million youth to donate 2.7 million service hours to more than 2.3 million organizations and raise $3.8 million for charitable causes across the globe.

Annual Company Giving Benefitted Thousands of Causes

Last spring, Allstaters brought out the good in their communities by raising money and giving their time via coast-to-coast volunteer projects supporting nonprofit organizations during the second annual Allstate Bring out the Good Month. Employees and agency owners planned 692 volunteer projects and supported 306 nonprofit organizations during the drive. Throughout 2016, Allstaters led a total of 7,500 volunteer projects and contributed over $7 million to more than 8,800 charities through personal donations and company matching donations.

Purple Purse Donates $4.1 Million, Helps 216,000 Domestic Abuse Survivors

Over the past decade, Allstate Foundation Purple Purse has become the nation’s longest-running program providing financial empowerment services for domestic violence survivors. The Allstate Foundation has invested more than $55 million on programs to help eliminate financial abuse. The 2016 campaign featured a moving short film about a survivor’s two-year journey to escape an abusive relationship without access to money. Purple Purse contributed more than $4.1 million to nonprofit organizations and helped more than 216,000 survivors last year, bringing the total survivors served since 2005 to more than one million.

Helping Veterans – Supporting Small Business Owners

We recently launched a program focused on recruiting active military and veterans to ease their transition out of the military. We believe the skills veterans bring can help set us apart from the competition, so we’re recruiting them for key roles across the business to build their skills and experience. The timing of this program couldn’t be better. In a first-of-its-kind study of America’s small business sector, the Allstate/USA TODAY Small Business Barometer revealed a strong climate for small businesses and a groundswell of optimism among local entrepreneurs. A majority of those surveyed (53 percent) said rapid innovation and an improving economy make now the best time ever to own a small business. Our goal is to make owning an Allstate agency one of the most rewarding small business opportunities in America.

Creating Safer Roads for Motorcyclists

Allstate has a long history of working to make America’s roads safer for everyone, and we have established programs specifically dedicated to motorcyclist safety. In 2009, we created the Once is Never Enough (O.N.E.) program, an awareness campaign to help reduce the number of motorcycle crashes at intersections by encouraging motorists to “look twice, because once is never enough.” Last May we launched “Guardians of the Ride,” which recognizes people across the country who promote and practice motorcycle safety. This past summer, we also sponsored the Sisters’ Centennial Motorcycle Ride, an all-female event celebrating sisters Augusta and Adeline Van Buren’s groundbreaking, cross-country trek in 1916.
