Callway Awards Water Processing Contract to Duratek

In May 2003, Duratek was awarded a three-year contract to provide on-site liquid waste processing services at the Callaway Nuclear Station in Missouri, located 80 miles west of St. Louis. The 5,228-acre plant site is situated on an elevated plateau overlooking the Missouri River. The power plant, in operation since October 1984, is a single-unit 1,127 megawatt pressurized water reactor (PWR) owned and operated by AmerenUE.

Duratek will install and operate its Advanced Liquid Processing System (ALPS), which utilizes demineralization technology to remove impurities and particulates from liquid radioactive waste. The system consists of demineralization vessels, radiation shielding, a control module, and Duratek's patented Advanced Injection Method (AIM) chemical injection system. The AIM system optimizes the performance of the ALPS by precisely controlling and varying the chemical injection rate as waste stream characteristics change.

In addition to on-site liquid waste processing services, Duratek will provide services necessary to assist Callaway in removal of antiquated process equipment that is currently located in the same area through installation and operation of the new liquid waste processing equipment. The comprehensive contract includes the following:

  • On-site waste packaging specialist to assist in dismantlement of existing equipment
  • Off-site processing of removed equipment
  • Transportation and packaging
  • ALPS/AIM equipment with operator/trainer
  • Standard dewatering system
  • Remote grapple system
  • Segmented rad-vault
Duratek will begin installation in November 2003. On-site operation of the ALPS equipment is scheduled to begin in January 2004.
