The Steam Generating Team Ltd. (SGT) awarded $200 million contract. SGT is jointly owned by Duke Engineering & Services (DE&S) and Morrison Knudsen. The contract was awarded by Baltimore Gas & Electric Co. to replace steam generators in the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant. SGT's turnkey responsibilities include project management, procurement, licensing support, engineering, design and installation.

DE&S expanded hydropower services. Its purchase of Cascades Environmental Services, Inc. and Hydropower Technologies brought additional environmental consulting expertise in hydropower and water resources and hydro mechanical consulting services to the DE&S portfolio.

Iowa State University contracted with DE&S to decommission Argonaut nuclear reactor. The reactor was used as part of an instructional facility beginning in 1959. DE&S will develop plans and carry out decommissioning and site remediation and will team with NSC Environmental Services to perform demolition, disposal and facility restoration.

Duke/Fluor Daniel awarded 11 major contracts in 1998. In addition to the Ingleside Project and Maine Independence Project, an affiliate of the partnership began construction of a 220 MW natural gas-fired simple cycle plant on the island of Trinidad in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. It was awarded a turnkey contract by Dearborn Industrial Generation, L.L.C. to build a 550 MW cogeneration plant serving Rouge Steel and Ford Motor Company facilities in Dearborn, Mich. Overall, Duke/Fluor Daniel was awarded five major engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contracts. It also expanded operations and maintenance (O&M) contracts, with four new facilities contracts and two renewals, bringing a total of 1,875 MW under contract.

DE&S awarded contract to build renewable energy plant on Mauritius. Compagnie Thermique De Belle Vue Limited awarded DE&S a $74 million turnkey EPC contract for a 70 MW power generation plant that will be fueled by bagasse, a waste fiber from sugar cane, the island's main crop. The renewable fuel and the clean-burning plant offer an environmental step forward for the island, located in the Indian Ocean.

Duke Energy created subsidiary to market antenna sites to wireless communications industry. Duke Communication Services began marketing more than 34,000 existing towers and property holdings in 34 states to help meet the rapidly growing need for wireless communication antennas. The subsidiary offers turnkey services to construct, install, own and manage antenna sites for single and multiple wireless carriers.

DukeSolutions acquired leading Canadian energy services company. With offices across Canada and a track record of more than $135 million of energy savings for more than 3,000 buildings, Tescor Energy Services, Inc. extended DukeSolutions' reach across much of North America.

DukeSolutions scored big contracts in 1998. In addition to its contracts with Kraft Foods, IBM and Pillowtex, other major contracts awarded to DukeSolutions included:

  • Three U.S. Department of Energy regional contracts to identify and install energy-saving improvements at federal facilities in 29 states. These contracts include the application of energy efficient technologies to lighting, heating and cooling, electric motors and other energy-consuming systems.
  • A contract to provide energy efficiency services, deregulation preparation services and electric and gas commodity services to Dana Commercial Credit Corporation of Toledo, Ohio.
