U.S. Cellular continues to invest in the company’s
future, growing the business in a way that allows us to
maintain high levels of customer satisfaction.
Network construction in new markets, as well as the ongoing
expansion of our network in existing markets, ensures
that our customers enjoy the very best in call quality
and clarity. Capital expenditures in 2004 totaled more
than $655 million to support our infrastructure.
We also completed a comprehensive network upgrade ahead
of schedule and under budget. U.S. Cellular’s entire
network is now equipped for CDMA 1X technology, the platform
that offers customers access to our easyedge
Enhanced Wireless Services.
By the end of 2004, easyedge offered
customers more than 250 downloadable applications ranging
from ringtones, games and wallpaper, to movie listings,
driving directions and sports scores.
The easyedge services complement U.S.
Cellular’s Mobile Messaging, the company’s
text messaging service. And the demand for these services
is growing rapidly. In 2004, revenues for U.S. Cellular’s
data services increased three-fold, with data services
representing $1.19 of the average retail service revenue
per customer, per month. Data services contributed a robust
$67 million in service revenues, or 2.5 percent of the
company’s total service revenues.
New features and services further drive customer satisfaction
— and ultimately, profitable growth for the company.
