Duratek Awarded Contract for Large Component Removal and Radioactive Material Disposition |
| |
“This project represents a significant step toward the complete decommissioning of DPC’s sole nuclear power reactor, thereby assuring the safe and predictable removal of over 95% of the non-fuel radioactivity at the plant. The DPC/Duratek team has worked with regulators over the last six months to develop an innovative approach to meet the site’s 2008 waste disposal deadline.”
Robert Prince, Duratek President and CEO
Dairyland Power Cooperative (DPC) awarded Duratek a contract for the removal and disposition of a 175‑ton reactor pressure vessel and other low-level radioactive material from the LaCrosse nuclear power plant in Wisconsin, which has been shut down since 1987. Other materials for disposition include irradiated hardware in the spent fuel pool, ion exchange media, and filters. The project starts immediately and will be completed over the next two years.
Duratek will provide the engineering, licensing, plant modifications, and heavy rigging and lifting services to safely remove the vessel from the containment building and place it on the transport vehicle for transportation to disposal.
